The large mining projects carried out in the region require a review of the public health map in terms of access to care. Ophthalmology is poorly represented in Boké, despite the presence of reduced staff in the regional hospital.

Voir La Vie is committed to opening a new ophthalmology unit within the hospital grounds, partnering with the NGO SightSavers. We will take less than a year to start and co-finance the development work and we will inaugurate the unit in April 2010.

In 2012, Voir La Vie decided to open an optical center in Boké. Similar to the one in Kindia, assembly equipment, lenses and frames were brought to the site by container. With the help of the KRYS Foundation, two French opticians from the KRYS Group network (Lionel SIMON in Fleurance and Thibault SYRE in Grenoble) left in March 2013 to assemble the equipment and open the center. The training of Balla Moussa DIAKITE (one of only two Guinean optometrists chosen to be responsible for the new center) took place during the mission.

NOW

For several years, the operation of this structure was carried out in partnership with the SightSavers International association. In 2013, the representative of the English NGO, Fanfodé KONDE, alerted us to the decision of its management to withdraw from health operations installed “inside” the country.

Voir La Vie took over the management and accelerated the autonomy of the teams to enable it to take charge of its own eye care development program. The management of the ophthalmology department was entrusted to Dr. Ismaël MAOMOU, assisted by Golé BILIVOGUI and N'Gandé KEITA, his two TSOs (Senior Technicians in Ophthalmology).

In addition to consultations within the department and surgical interventions carried out in the operating room, the team also works with children by carrying out school screening missions. Advanced strategies also allow the medical team to leave the unit to meet sedentary populations, such as those in the regions of Gaoual and Koundara, on the border with Senegal.

The most comprehensive eye care
