N'Z\u00e9r\u00e9kor\u00e9 is the capital of Forest Guinea. Its 300,000 inhabitants make it the 2nd city in the country. But the development of this green region full of natural wealth is hampered by its environmental isolation. Stuck in an area where a very dense forest has invaded everything, access to N'Z\u00e9r\u00e9kor\u00e9 is limited by the ability to cross the Til\u00e9 River. Often raw, imposing and dangerous, this long serpent of water is a real border which imprisons an entire region, creating dozens of giant and impassable backwaters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, gradually, N'Z\u00e9r\u00e9kor\u00e9 saw the growth of its neighboring towns, such as Macenta or Gu\u00e9ck\u00e9dou, come at its expense. Cooperation, construction and commercial exchanges have suffered from the natural isolation of N'Z\u00e9r\u00e9kor\u00e9. The local health landscape was like the rest: rudimentary and moribund. Lack of resources but also lack of interest from public authorities and private actors on Guinean soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The N'Z\u00e9r\u00e9kor\u00e9 ophthalmological unit is a relocation of our Fria unit, designed in 2014 in collaboration with the Guinean NGO AMSO (Association M\u00e9dicale pour Sauver l'Oeil), directed by Abdoulaye NABE. Together, we took the risk of leaving Fria, a town already equipped with 2 hospitals (public and private) where ophthalmological solutions exist to transfer personnel and equipment to Forest Guinea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With staff already recruited and fully trained and operational equipment, we relocated the unit in 2015. The team quickly established itself among a population previously excluded from access to eye care. Since then, both in fixed centers and during advanced strategies, consultations and surgical interventions have constituted the weekly program for the collaborators of Dr. Hawa SOUMAH, head of department and member of AMSO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
